As the newest iPhone hits the market, the talk of upgrading is everywhere. The freshly unveiled iPhone 15 series lives up to the hype and stands as one of the top-tier phones available today. Everyone is eagerly waiting to upgrade to the iPhone 15.
However, looking at the extensive features and specifications of the iPhone 15 series, is it the best device for you at this moment? Is upgrading from your current device worthwhile? In this article, we’ll tell you six reasons why upgrading to the iPhone 15 is a good choice and two reasons why staying with your current device might be a better option.
Reasons to Upgrade to the iPhone 15
Dynamic Island
Last year, Apple ended the 5-year run of big notches on their Pro iPhones and replaced it with a pill-shaped cutout, which they named the Dynamic Island. This year, this “innovation” from Apple finally trickled down to the non-pro iPhones, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
The Dynamic Island coming to the iPhone 15 makes this phone a worthwhile upgrade over the iPhone 13 and even its direct predecessor, the iPhone 14.
Better Cameras
Another Pro feature that dropped to the non-Pro iPhones (quite surprisingly) is the 48MP camera. Being honest, I don’t think anyone expected Apple to do this. And I personally didn’t expect this for another 2 years, seeing as in 2023, non-pro iPhones still haven’t gotten ProMotion from 2021.
The new 48MP sensor on the iPhone 15 is 65% bigger than the 12MP sensor on the iPhone 14 and can capture twice as much light. All this translates to very detailed pictures and impressive low-light performance, making it totally worth it to upgrade to the iPhone 15.
New Processor
As is now the custom with Apple since last year, only Pro models get new chips while non-pro phones get last year’s Pro model’s processor. So this year, the iPhone 15 got the Bionic A16. And here’s the difference between this and the Bionic A15 in the iPhone 14.
Benchmark Tool(Higher Is Better) | A16 Bionic(iPhone 15) | A15 Bionic(iPhone 14) |

3DMark Wild Life Performance | 9851 | 8702 |
2000 nits Peak Brightness
Yet another pro-iPhone feature that’s coming to the non-pro iPhone 15 models is a 2000 nits peak brightness display. One of the world’s brightest displays on a smartphone ever! So the iPhone 15 is not just going to be visible under direct sunlight; it’s going to be properly usable without any discoloration.
Curved Edges
For years now, I have complained, you have complained, and all of us have complained. Complained about how uncomfortable iPhones with sharp edges were to hold. The edges dig into one’s palm, and paired with how heavy the phones are, just made the comfortability situation worse.
This year, Apple finally listened and made changes to the edges of the entire iPhone 15 series. Now the iPhone 15 has a curve that makes it way more comfortable to hold and use for prolonged periods.
USB Type C
USB Type-C is finally here! One of the biggest changes to this year’s iPhone lineup is the addition of USB Type-C charging port. Though, as we all know, Apple didn’t add it as a gesture of their good pleasure. They were forced by EU electronics laws. But Apple didn’t just take this lying down.
For one, Apple used USB 2.0 on the non-pro iPhones, which have transfer speeds of just 480 Mbps, the same as the lightning cable (the latest is USB 3.2 and has speeds of 40 GB). Secondly, Apple seemingly didn’t increase the charging speeds of the iPhone 15 lineup, despite it being easier with USB C. And lastly, according to reports, iPhone 15 phones will only charge at full speed if you use an Apple-certified cable.
On the bright side, one cable can charge all your devices now, and you don’t have to worry about being unable to quickly find a charging cable as everyone now uses USB C.
Reasons Not to Upgrade to the iPhone 15
Pill-shaped Cutout
Looking beyond the whole Dynamic Island euphoria, at the end of the day, the feature is what it is: an intrusive and big pill-shaped cutout on your screen, potentially disrupting your content. For those who frequently enjoy full-screen content, the pill cutout is likely to be a source of frustration. You may even find it more bothersome than the notch due to its lower placement on the screen. In comparison to the hole-punch cutout found on Android phones and even the notch on the iPhone 14, the pill-shaped cutout on the iPhone 15 stands out as a particularly unsightly element.
The iPhone 14
If you currently own an iPhone 14, upgrading to the iPhone 15 may not be justified. It’s advisable to stick with your iPhone 14 unless you’re specifically seeking some of the new features Apple added to the iPhone 15.
Furthermore, the iPhone 14 currently offers better value than its successor, the iPhone 15. It provides the performance of last year’s top-tier phone at a more affordable price. The iPhone 14 already delivers excellent value for your money, and you can save even more by considering refurbished options available at SmartphonesPLUS.
